The IUE-CWA and General Motors Corp. have reached agreement on health care coverage for retirees, the union said Tuesday, Sept. 1.

As of Jan. 1, 2010, coverage will cease for retirees older than 65, those who are eligible for Medicare, said Jim Clark, president of the International Union of Electronic Workers and Communication Workers of America.

ìWe tried long and hard to get post-65î coverage, Clark said, but GM would not put those ìcostsî on the new, post-bankruptcy company, he said.

As of Jan. 1, the new coverage plan for retirees younger than 65 will include monthly contributions of $95 for single payers, $140 for couples and $180 for families. The annual deductible will $2,500 for single coverage and $5,000 for family plans.

Under the pre-65 plan, retirees should assess their situation and ìother options available,î Clark said.

He said the union will soon send retirees letters explaining coverage.

In the last couple of weeks, the union won an additional $50 million for a total $467 million coverage package for pre-65 retirees. The union can spend the entire $467 million on its members, Clark said. Previously, GM had required that when anyone had opted out of coverage, that ìwindfallî would have returned to GM, rather than the union.

Current health coverage will be in place through Dec. 31, 2009.

Also Tuesday, Clark said GM will ìtop offî pensions for Delphi hourly retirees who were GM employees when GM spun off Delphi in 1999. A number of other eligible retirees covered under a 2007 memo of understanding will also see their pensions made whole, the IUE-CWA said.

Delphi hourly and salaried pensions are being moved to the federally backed Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., and their benefits are expected to be reduced. GM had previously said it would bolster hourly pensions.

ìThat is extremely large for our people,î Clark said.

Thought I read somewhere that GM would pay a lump sum for those that opted out of this stupid  health care plan.
Single person is on the hook for at least 3640 a year.
Called the GM benefit center today and they have no idea if there is a lump sum for opting out..
I retired from Delphi in 2006 with 25 years and CHECKED THE BOX.
Oh by the way,I'm still waitting for that letter from the union..explaining the coverage.
Since I retired I have received nothing from "our" union

My understanding is the IUE got the GM Pension Topoff but were Unsuccessful in getting Medical Coverage.

Which is not fair to them. These are the Delphi Packard Employee's I'm speaking of.

Are You one of them.

yes I'm a former Packard Electric  Employee
So far the problem I have is lack of info which has been this way since the start
I can not make an informed decision on anything if there are unknowns
The medical plan they are offering is really just a catastrofic plan I figure for a single person it will cost $95 a month (almost 1200 a year) and then the first $2500.00  is all yours, then the Maximun out of pocket is $3500...
Without them telling you how much your going to get from the Gov.,PBGC and how much GM is really going to "top offf" its a decision that one should have more than 12 days to make
Received my package a few days ago and I have till 12-1 to sign up
One thing I did find out by calling metlife was the life insurance is different than health care, so if one refuses the health care they will still be covered with the 10,000. policy
